Does Bhagat even know the admission procedure in engineering colleges of India? There are engineering colleges in India which even though are not NIT/IITs are government funded and quiet reputable (In some cases, even as good as the NIT/IITs). If you cannot get into IIT/NITs, the only option left is private colleges or to become a watchman (Seriously, he wrote that). Bhagat implies it on every page that it’s either IIT/NIT or bust. Two boys try to get into IIT/NIT in order to become engineers. To say that the story is extremely shallow might be the understatement of the year. You almost feel that Bhagat wanted to cash in on the Anna Hazare movement against corruption. Instead, it becomes a highly clichéd love story which has nothing to do with revolution whatsoever. But, Revolution 2020 never even comes close to that. When you name your novel Revolution 2020, one expects a kind of soul searching, revolutionary story about a country that needs change more than ever.

He lies in his bed and suppresses his tears, because The Rules for dealing with the death of a loved one are: 1) No crying, 2) Don't snitch, and 3) Get revenge by killing the killer. Will returns to his mother's eighth-floor apartment and listens to his mother sobbing in the kitchen. This happens with every shooting because The Rules dictate that nobody ever snitches. When the police come, none of the witnesses will say that they saw anything. Will notes that the killers didn't steal Shawn's gold necklace. Their mother is distraught and moaning, while Shawn’s girlfriend, Leticia, kneels over the body and screams. Will goes back to the day, explaining that he is talking with his friend Tony when Shawn is shot outside their building. Written in verse and narrated in the first person by Will Holloman, a fifteen-year-old Black American, Long Way Downopens with Will revealing that his older brother, Shawn, was killed two days earlier. As you can tell by that example, the parallels in problem-solving and tactics used by this mother to be a good parent are the same skills she can apply to taking on alien (and human) threats. The toddler insists she wants a green box instead of the blue one that the mother drew, so - rather than arguing with a toddler - she just draws another box with the green chalk. His three year-old sister wants to watch, but their mother needs to take care of other things and she doesn't want to allow her toddler to be accidentally burned by her eight year-old, so she tells the toddler that she can only stay in the garage (where the boy is practicing cooking above concrete) if she stays within a box drawn on to the floor. For example, at one point, the oldest boy is put to work using his fire ability to cook frozen chicken tenders. Not only does she struggle to keep her kids alive, but you are constantly seeing how strategic and tactical her parenting methods are. *Apocalypse Parenting* is a breath of fresh air as it delivers tremendously on the beloved themes and game-ification that defines the genre while adding a new wrinkle by having the main character be a mother of three small children. I'm a huge fan of litrpg and progression novels with system apocalypse subgenre being one of my favorites, but many of these do tend to be quite similar - especially in their themes as the main differences tend to be in the game systems their authors imagine. However, there’s also a dizzying number of spinoffs, one-shots, and specials to sift through. On the surface, reading the series in order seems pretty straightforward, since all the issues are collected into 10 numbered volumes. Netflix’s highly anticipated new adaptation of The Sandman, Neil Gaiman’s classic comics series chronicling the exploits of Dream of the Endless, is dropping in August. I am glad I found out about this book, glad I asked for it for Christmas, glad I received it as a gift, and yet, it did take me nearly all year to read. I heard of Clarion West, but I didn’t attend any of their workshops until this last summer, and so I had missed out on this little book of gems by Ray Bradbury (and many other opportunities for spec fic writers which are practically staring me in the face these days). How, as a speculative fiction writer who has been writing a mix of sci-fi and fantasy for over thirty years, had I never heard of this little tome of writing craft and wisdom from one of the classic giants of science fiction literature?įor what it’s worth, I took some literary classes and when I did take a commercial fiction class, not many writers were sci-fi minded. Recommended to me by a writing friend who I’ve never met in person, Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury is one of those books I wish I had read years ago. That series and this one are both set back in the day when women still wore bustles, sent out cards before going visiting, and when there were rules to appearing in society. I'll be posting my thoughts on that series very soon as I just realized I had not yet talked about it on here! Hopefully you'll already be acquainted with Gail Carriger's other series The Parasol Protectorate series, but if you haven't been yet, that's okay though you should rectify that as soon as possible.
